Frequently asked questions

What to know before your first project, and where to turn when you need a hand.

Getting started

What is freecode?

A coding agent that runs in your terminal. Describe a task in plain language. It can read and edit project files, explain unfamiliar code, and run commands to help build or fix a project.

Do I need to know how to code?

You can start without much experience. It explains changes in plain words and can run your tests, but you should still review the result before you publish it.

Do I need a model API key or subscription?

No model API key or paid subscription is required to start. Follow the sign-in instructions when you launch freecode. Free access has usage limits.

Which computers are supported?

The npm installer supports macOS on Apple silicon or Intel, and Windows on x64. Linux and Windows on ARM are not currently supported by this installer. See the installation guide for prerequisites and terminal setup.

How do I install it and start a project?

Start with the installation guide, then open a dedicated project folder. The guide walks through installation and your first prompt. For a small project with a checklist, try the reading-list tutorial.

Cost and limits

How is it free?

Sponsor cards help cover the cost. They are clearly labeled in the interface and are not written into your code. Free access comes with usage limits.

Are there limits?

Yes. Free access has a daily usage limit. If you reach it, freecode tells you when access resets.

Code and data

What happens to my code?

You keep ownership of your work. freecode and its providers process the content needed to work on your task. Our privacy policy explains how session data is used.

Is my session data used beyond answering my prompt?

Yes. Processing is not limited to your computer or the model response. The privacy policy describes session content, diagnostics, and usage information. It also covers context used for sponsored recommendations and eligible data licensing, including applicable notice and permission requirements. Read it before sharing sensitive material.

Can I use it on work code?

Only if you have permission to share it. Check your employer’s rules and the privacy policy before using company code. Keep credentials out of prompts.

Can it change files and run commands?

Yes. Review what it changes and check the result. Start in a dedicated folder or keep a recoverable copy of an existing project. Read commands and permission requests before approving them. The first-project guide shows how to test behavior and report a specific failure.
